Who You Are Matters - Alex Ster

 Who You Are Matters

Describe where you come from

I was born in La Jolla, California, and I am lucky to have been raised in San Diego, California. I grew up in Del Mar, with a 5-minute drive to the beach, and have been grateful for my hometown since I was born. Although I did not grow up here, all the family staycations, dinners, ice skating around the holidays, and now our recent unit, Coronado, California, is also home. Coronado is a charming island with the kindest people, a clean environment, and gorgeous sunset views from any direction.

Tell me where you're going

I want to be a well-known and established female founder and CEO of a health and wellness company. I have yet to determine the specific company or product, but I am interested in athletic apparel, non-profits, and eating whole foods. My biggest inspirations are brands like Purley Elizabeth (a gronola company) and Madhappy (a wellness clothing company).

I am also intensely interested in technology, cybersecurity, and software sales.  I just had a summer internship where I gained go-to-market experience in cyber security sales and have been in contact with working with corporations like Apple post my master's program.

Tell me how you plan to get there

After I complete my undergraduate degree, I plan to finish my Master of Science in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.  I will graduate in December 2025 with my master's and want to use that extra semester to launch my first wellness company.

How are you LIKE your parents

My mom has the kindest soul and has taught me the importance of being nice to everyone. I am grateful that my parents raised me with a modest Midwest mindset and morals. My dad and I are different, but we are similar in that we love a good laugh and are prepared to outwork anyone to reach a goal.

How are you UNLIKE your parents

Island In The Sun - My Mindset At All Times

My parents are my best friends and biggest supporters. However, they are both always focused on what's next and take everything seriously. I am happy-go-lucky, optimistic, and easygoing.

Have you developed your own expectations for yourself, or if you were honest, would you say you're operating under someone else's expectations?

"Habits are the compound interest for self improvement" (Clear, 2018).

USC Professor David Balasco assigned James Clear's novel Atomic Habits in his entrepreneurship course, which has changed my thinking. Instead of getting overwhelmed and easily stressed, I embrace it. As someone who is hard on myself, I am trying to take control and get to a point where I am proud of myself, no matter the outcome.

Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?

As a young female entrepreneur, Paige Lorenze is someone I not only idolize but also try to copy. She promotes mental health and well-being and shares every step of the process of the latest updates on her company, Dairy Boy, on YouTube.

Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?

As someone who grew up by the beach, I find the water my happy place. I would love nothing more than to swim in herds of family and friends like dolphins do and communicate only with each other. I am independent, but I love being around like-minded, hardworking, kind, and active people.

Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.

Growing up, my sister and I were close with our neighbors Kimberly and Tiffany. One of our favorite playdates was when we made potions, aka found pretty leaves, lemons from our tree, and flowers, and laid them in front of our tree in the backyard. We would look all over the backyard to find the perfect ingredients for our creations, and it is something that I will cherish forever.

  2. I love how you described your mindset as an "island in the sun!" It is interesting that you are the opposite of your parents in that way. I have also read Atomic Habtis, and it is easily one of my favorite books. We don't realize that even the smallest of habits can make a huge difference over time.

  3. Atomic habits is a great book! San Diego seems like a great place to grow up - it's hard to beat having the beach so close to home.

  4. My roommate recently mentioned the 'Atomic Habits' book and swears by it, definitely a must read from the sound of things from you both and how that has changed your way of thinking and dealing with stress + being overwhelmed. I too am always hard on myself - we're our own worst critic. Sometimes hard to realize how much we have achieved and done well for ourselves when the outcome isn't the most ideal. Definitely believe in being proud of our efforts and pursuit no matter the outcome. I am all for supporting being a female founder and CEO, can't wait to see what it is you accomplish! Paige Mycoskie is someone I would recommend looking into - well known for her brand Aviator Nation, emphasizing on the fact that her clothing brand is woman owned and sustainable with every garment being handmade here in LA :) I believe her success story is worth the read!

  7. Hey Alex 2 or 1. Whatever you prefer. I also go every winter down to Coronado to ice skate. It is definitely a very cool spot to check out, for those who have yet to experience it.

  8. Alex, though very different, I find some similarities in the animals that we chose. While you chose a dolphin and I chose a cheetah, which are very different animals, how they communicate is constantly studied and the sounds that they make are quite similar for being such different creatures!

  9. My parents are also so worried about the future and having everything planned out, sometimes it is hard to understand them as I am also very easygoing. I agree having healthy habits are essential for accomplishing your goals.
